An oil-based nanofluid is provided to improve the energy efficiency, service life, and reliability of a potential transformer by increasing heat transfer characteristics of an insulating oil by 10% or more. A method for preparing an oil-based nanofluid includes the steps of: dispersing a metal, non-metal or ceramic-based nano powder aggregate in a liquid solvent and performing wet grinding; performing a lipophilic surface modification of the nano powder; removing superfluous dispersant and water using ultrafiltration membranes; and replacing the liquid solvent with a predetermined oil using a vacuum evaporator. The oil-based nanofluid is obtained by dispersing 0.01-5 vol% of the metal, non-metal, or ceramic-based nano powder in oil, wherein the nano powder has a diameter of 1-100 nm.
