An apparatus for charging a capacitor of a regenerative inverter in a subway substation is provided to drive the regenerative inverter, even when no power is supplied from a DC source line, by forming a pre-charge circuit at both sides of an AC source line and a DC source line. A DC capacitor(14) is arranged at a DC input side of a power converter(12), which converts regenerated energy from a DC source line to an AC voltage. A reactor(26) is connected to a 3-phase AC output side. A DC main switch(30) is connected between the DC capacitor and the DC source line. A DC auxiliary switch(32) is series-connected to the main switch. A resistor(34) is parallel-connected to the main switch. An AC main switch(36) and an AC auxiliary switch are series-connected to the reactor and the resistor, respectively. The DC capacitor is charged by the power from the DC source line or the AC source line.
