Layered inorganic compounds substituted by reactive phosphonium intercalating agents are provided to increase a distance between layers and produce nanocomposites having enhanced mechanical and thermal stability and fire retardant properties. The layered inorganic compounds substituted by reactive phosphonium intercalating agents represented by the formula(1) are provided, wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different, and each independently C1-5 alkyl group, and R3 is C1-12 alkyl group. A layered inorganic compound-dispersed polystyrene is prepared by in-situ polymerizing styrene monomer with the layered inorganic compounds substituted by reactive phosphonium intercalating agents. The modified poly(phenylene oxide)/clay nanocomposites are prepared by mixing 20 wt.% of layered inorganic compound-dispersed polystyrene with 80 wt.% of polyphenylene oxide by using an extruder.
