An image-interpolating apparatus and an image-interpolating method are provided to perform interpolation of lost pixels, expansion of resolution, and de-interlacing efficiently, by using an expanded cubic curve pitting algorithm. First real pixels have pixel values within a frame of an image to be interpolated. Second real pixels are disposed on the same line in a horizontal direction or a vertical direction while forming an interpolation area. An edge direction-estimating part(120) estimates an edge direction based on relative positions of pixels, wherein each of the pixels has the minimum absolute error of pixel value between the second real pixels. A first interpolation part(130) calculates a pixel value of a first interpolation pixel by using an interpolation function. The first interpolation pixel is positioned at a crossing point of a line, which passes through interpolation pixels between the second real pixels in the estimated edge direction, and an extension line, which connects the second real pixels in the horizontal direction or the vertical direction. A second interpolation part(140) calculates a pixel value of a second interpolation pixel by a weighted average value of pixel values of the second real pixels or first interpolation pixels, wherein the first interpolation pixels are positioned on a line, which passes through the second interpolation pixels except the above first interpolation pixel among the interpolation pixels in the estimated edge direction.
