An extract of Glycyrrhiza radix or liquiritin or liquiritigenin isolated therefrom is provided to show excellent inhibitory effect on release of nucleus accumbens dopamine, thereby being used as a pharmaceutical composition and a health functional food for preventing and treating drug abuse and withdrawal symptoms. A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating drug abuse and withdrawal symptoms comprises 0.02-50 wt.% of an extract of Glycyrrhiza radix or liquiritin or liquiritigenin isolated therefrom as an effective ingredient, wherein the extract is prepared by using a solvent selected from the group consisting of water, C1-4 alcohol and a mixture thereof.
