A method and an apparatus for monitoring a temperature and a gas in an underground power cable are provided to monitor a surface temperature of the power cable and a gas state in a cable tunnel by transmitting the monitored result through a USN. An apparatus for monitoring a temperature and a gas in an underground power cable includes a sensing node, a relay unit(4), a collecting node(6), and a collection information monitoring unit(7). The sensing node senses various underground gas concentrations and a surface temperature of a power line. The relay units are arranged underground at a constant space, so that positions of the sensing nodes and sensed information are transmitted. The collecting node collects the sensed information from the relay unit on the ground. The collection information monitoring unit monitors the sensed information from the collecting node using a USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network).
