FIELD: mechanics, physics.;SUBSTANCE: gear tooth with its tip participating in the edge contact is simulated by a wedge method. Gear tooth with its root participating in the edge contact is simulated by a cylindrical method. A wedge specimen is moved in contact with a cylindrical specimen so that the initial contact line gets aligned with the cylindrical specimen generating line, the angle between tangent to the cylindrical specimen surfaces and the wedge specimen cylindrical face, on simulation of engagement into mesh, being equal to the simulated teeth relative turn angle during the period of their contact. Lubrication is fed into the specimens contact zone by a technique selected for the gearing being simulated. Rotary motion is imparted to the cylindrical specimen, while a force required to determine the designed specific load in the said contact zone is applied to the wedge specimen. In simulating the edge contact during engagement into mesh, the senses of rotation of the simulated gearing cylindrical specimen and drive wheel are opposite. During the experiment, the wedge specimen is turned about the specimens contact line in the direction of the cylindrical specimen rotation through the angle equal to the simulated teeth relative turn angle during the period of their edge contact. Specific load in the contact of specimens is taken to be proportional to specific load on the simulated gearing teeth.
