The feeder comprises a prompter (136) for moving sheets or other flat articles from a stack (140) along a flowpath (121). The prompter comprises a shaft (135), a body (137), a drive roller (142), an opposing idler roller (141) and a belt (138). The shaft runs transversely to the flow path and the drive roller is mounted to it. The body is pivotably engaged with the shaft at the drive roller end with an opposite end movably positioned upstream of it. The idler roller is mounted at the opposite end of the body and the belt is mounted on and endlessly runs around the two rollers. The belt surface is ribbed to frictionally engage with and carry articles downstream along the flowpath. The shaft rotates to move the belt around the rollers.
