The invention relates to novel metal complexes of 2-amino- -und 2-hydroxy-2-phosphino alkanic acid derivatives (2-amino-- and 2-hydroxy-2-phosphinoalkanoate-transition metal derivatives), a method for the production of said compounds from metal-free 2-amino- und 2-hydroxy-2-phosphino-alkanic acid derivatives and 2-phosphoniobis (2-hydroxy alkanic acid) derivatives and the use of said metal complexes as catalysts for the oligomerization or polymerization of 1-olefins. The inventive metal complexes of 2-amino- and 2-hydroxy-2-phosphino-alkanic acid derivatives are reproduced in general formula I(A), wherein A is the same as -+NHR4R5 (type 1) or -OH (with +NH2R4R5 as a counter ion: type 2), and Y is a complex fragment (M, 1/2M, MLn oder 1/2MLn), wherein M is a metal. Said metal complexes are produced from the corresponding starting compounds, wherein phosphorus includes a free electron pair, instead of the complex fragment Y, a boron compound BR3 or a radical -C ( (COO- ) (OH) R1). The oligomerization or 1-olefins is carried out by means of catalysis using the inventive metal complexes in a suitable solvent.
