The device has a capacitive rain sensor (2) with a detection area (2A) arranged within a range of a windscreen (1) that is over-wiped by a wiper (3). Signals (RS) of the sensor are provided to a controller (4). The controller has an over-wipe identification unit (4A) that recognizes the over wipe of the wiper over the detection area of the sensor based on the changes of the capacitance in the detection area of the sensor. The identification unit is active only if the wiper is in a parking/reversing position.
