The engine has a piston area formed by a longitudinally-adjustable piston (4). A valve (6) is provided for connecting the piston area with an inlet channel and an outlet channel. A control unit formed as a longitudinal slide valve (12) is assigned to the valve, where the control unit controls the connection of the valve with the inlet channel and the outlet channel. The valve and the longitudinal slide valve are actuated by a cam (10), and the longitudinal slide valve is positively driven to the cam. The longitudinal slide valve is provided with a frame-like cam guide (14).
