The method involves determining axial temperature distribution in one of exhaust gas treatment systems by a dynamic heat model (1). The heat of reaction generated during the exhaust gas treatment in exhaust gas treatment systems is determined by a kinetic model (2). The exhaust gas treatment systems are represented for the dynamic heat model and the kinetic model by discrete cells, which are arranged one behind the other in an axial direction. The heat of reaction determined using the kinetic model is utilized as an input parameter for the dynamic heat model.
