Microscopic positioning frame for infrared detector used in e.g. weapon system or search and rescue system

A microscopic positioning (2) frame (4) is placed on a detector and forms part of an infrared search head depicting partial fields of view. The frame surrounds a substrate (6) coupled to an actuator (10) and microscopic components (8). The frame is located within a fixed mechanical end-stop (20) that defines a position of the stable substrate (6). The actuator (10) is linked to both end-stop and frame. The actuator (10) is a piezo-electric bending device. The actuator and end-stop operate together to define two stable positions. Also claimed is the use of the microscopic adjustment mechanism for the selective detection of optical targets by an infra-red detector (28).
