Water-insoluble, polymeric, associative thickeners (T1) with a block structure, in which at least one block of the polymer backbone contains hydrophobic, water-insoluble polymers and the chain ends of T1 are mainly modified with hydrophobic alkyl, alkaryl or aryl residues with at least 6 carbon atoms. An independent claim is included for aqueous preparations containing 2-50 wt% T1, 2-50 wt% emulsifier(s), 0-96 wt% water and optionally other additives such as preservatives and stabilisers.
