Water-soluble or -dispersible polyurethanes (I) obtained by the reaction of polyether-polyols with di-isocyanates, in which the reaction mixture also contains a 6-34C (cyclo)aliphatic mono-alcohol with at least one C=C double bond and/or an alkoxylate thereof with at least one ethylene oxide or propylene oxide unit. Water-soluble or -dispersible polyurethanes (I) obtained by the single- or multi-stage reaction at an NCO/OH equiv. ratio of (0.5:1)-(1.2:1), of (A) polyther-polyol(s) with an average functionality of at least 2, (B) (cyclo)aliphatic and/or aromatic di-isocyanate(s), (C) 6-34C (cyclo)aliphatic mono-alcohol(s) with at least one C=C double bond and/or alkoxylated products of these with at least one ethylene oxide (EO) or propylene oxide (PO) unit and optionally (D) another 6-34C monofunctional component which can react with isocyanates, preferably a (cyclo)alphatic and/or aromatic mono-alcohol, mono-alcohol alkoxylate or amine. Independent claims are included for (1) a method for the production of (I) by reacting the above components together as described (2) a method for the production of thickened aqueous systems, especially paint systems, adhesives and other aqueous formulations, by adding (I) and then mixing and maturing (3) aqueous or mainly aqueous systems containing (I) .
