The waste is first pre-comminuted coarsely. The product is then treated in a cold chamber (4) within the temperature range -70[deg]C to -120[deg]C, to embrittle the rubber. The brittle rubber and metal are then separated. When used for recycling steel-cord-reinforced rubber conveyor belts, the large, similarly-sized pre-comminuted sections (2) are laid onto a winding unit (1) and then passed through the cold chamber. Steel and brittle rubber are separated, on leaving the cold chamber. The unwound conveyor belt strand passes through the cold chamber such that its running side faces downwardly. It is guided by two rollers (3) at the cold chamber entry. On leaving the chamber, the conveyor belt passes through two deflection rollers which break the rubber fragments away from the steel cords. The rubber fragments continue on a conveyor belt (6) to a location of further use (7). Following separation, the steel cords are cleaned by an ultrasonic- or vibratory equipment (8) and then wound onto a core (9).
