The system (1) has a radiator fan (2), and a radiator fan electronics (3) connected with an engine control unit (4), where a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal is supplied to the control unit. An activation signal and a supply voltage of an onboard supply system are supplied to the fan electronics. The PWM signal of 0 and/or 100 percentage is assigned to a dry running operation of the fan. The radiator fan electronics measures an electrical system voltage during the detected dry running operation and switches off the fan during dropping of the electrical system voltage below a threshold. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a cooling system for an internal combustion engine.
