The starting unit (1) has a starting element (4) comprising a hydrodynamic coupling (5) with a primary wheel (6) and a secondary wheel (7). The secondary wheel is indirectly connected with an input (E) of a transmission (2) that is connected downstream of the starting unit. A coupling unit (9) is provided for selective coupling of either the primary wheel or the secondary wheel to the input of the transmission. A brake device is arranged between the secondary wheel and a synchronously adjustable coupling (10).
