To determine the actual compression ratio of a piston motor, with the effective kinetic length of the variable compression volume (18) and a crank angle which can be measured, a sensor generates a signal relating to a moving component. A trigger angle (23) is established from the signal in relation to the crank angle to give the actual compression ratio of the moment. The electronic sensor system (6) has a sensor (7) for a moving piston part and a sensor (8) to register the crank angle for an electronic signal evaluation unit (14).
