The rescue device comprises a horizontal beam (3) built into the exterior wall (1) and extends out into the operating position. The beam (3) has a rope (4) attached with a person-carrier (5) connected via a braked winch that can be controlled by the person being rescued. The beam (3) can move between the rest position where it is completely encased in the wall (1) with its anterior end (25) coplanar to the wall (1) and the operating position where the anterior end (25) projects to a safe distance from the wall (1) for descent. The rope (4) unrolls from a drum controlled by the person during descent through the use of brakes. Independent claims are included for: use of the device for rescuing people situated on high storeys where the beam (3) is attached to the wall (1) near a door or window (27) from which it is possible to easily reach the beam (3) for connecting the rescue rope (4);#for use of the device where the door or window (27) is equipped with apparatus for automatically opening during power failure;#for use of the device where a cupboard for spare person-carriers is located near the beam (3).
