The method involves implementing a driving condition detection, where a roll-over detection is implemented for detecting tilting or rolling over of a motor vehicle as driving condition detection. The releasing of a belt (16) is controlled based on the detected driving conditions, where the release of the belt is limited at a belt force in case of an accident without a detected roll over condition, and the release of the belt is limited at another belt force in case of an accident with a detected roll over condition. An independent claim is also included for a computer program product with a program code unit comprising a set of instructions for performing a method of operating an occupant restraint system of a motor vehicle.
