The device has a set of measuring devices (10, 11, 12, 13, 14) for recording driving parameters of vehicles (1). An evaluation device (15) is provided for evaluation of the detected driving parameters of the vehicles and for determination of critical traffic situation from the evaluation. A set of signaling devices (16) is provided for transmission of signals to one of the vehicles when critical traffic situations are present. An emergency device provides emergency measures in the case of a threatening accident. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a motor vehicle.
