The laser unit (1) operates in pulsed mode. Pulses of laser light (3) and/or laser pulse packets are generated with a variable mark space ratio. Pulse widths and/or the duration of pauses and/or the mark space ratio are variable at will. Pulse widths of successive pulses and/or pulse packets and/or the pauses and/or pulse packets are of differing length. Further variations of the pulse emission profile are elaborated.
