The method involves guiding a cutting beam (10) with a feed rate along an intersection line (18) over a workpiece (14). The feed rate (16) is dynamically varied during a temporal section of a cutting process in such a manner that the formation of a mark is prevented. The feed rate is maintained during another temporal section extended up to the end of the cutting process. The feed rate during the former temporal section of the cutting process is reduced based on a start speed in the direction of a terminal velocity. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for cutting a workpiece with the cutting beam (2) a computer program with program code instructions for the implementation of a method of cutting a workpiece (3) a computer program product with a computer program for cutting the workpiece.
