The method involves determining peak normal voltages from voltage distribution within a limited area of a component. A peak normal voltage factor is calculated from the voltages, and a weighting factor is calculated for each load condition of the component from the sum of the voltages of the respective condition. A reference angle is calculated as average value of an orientation from the orientation of the highest peak normal voltage for each area, and an orientation factor is determined for each area from the angle. The factors are multiplied with each other to provide characteristics data.
