The device (1) has two projection devices (5a, 5b), where each is formed for emission of light beams (6a, 6b) that produces an optical mark (14a, 14b) on a work piece (7) and is present in an emission plane. A detection device has an image optics for imaging a region of the mark (14a) on a position sensitive detector (15) e.g. charge coupled device line sensor. The emission planes are located across each other such that the light beams cut along an intersection line (13), which runs through the region. The detection device is insensitive for light of the light beam (6b).
