The method involves measuring gas concentration by a gas sensor (14), and operating a dismantling device (12) in dependence on the result of the measurement. The gas concentration is held within a long wall during approximation to the predetermined maximum limit value of the gas concentration by reduction of the delivery rate of the dismantling device, without stopping the dismantling device. The delivery rate is computed from the speed of the dismantling device. The gas content of the dismantled material is computed from the computed delivery rate and the measured gas concentration. An independent claim is also included for a controller for a longwall face, comprising an evaluation device.
