The method involves actuating of an internal combustion engine automatically, depending on an activation condition and is deactivated automatically depending on a deactivation condition. The activation and deactivation condition depends on an output signal of a gear selection lever sensor (30), which indicates an approach of the driver to the gear selection lever and a contact of the gear selection lever by the driver.
