The device (100) has a synchronization station (60), which is actively connected with the evaluation unit (70). The synchronization station synchronizes the transmitter (20) and the evaluation unit on a common trigger frequency. A short-range synchronization path (62) is formed on the synchronization station, on which the transmitter and the evaluation unit are synchronized on the common trigger frequency at the synchronization station during adequate convergence of the transmitter. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a distance or a space position of a target object through propagation time measurements of ultrasonic pulses.
