The device has an optical transmitter designed in the form of an opto-electronic digital leveler (3) and/or automatic-horizontal rotation laser. A point-coded measuring rod (5) is fixedly mounted on a roof to be monitored. The digital leveler detects the actual height of the measuring rod and/or displacement of the rod in a vertical direction, where the leveler also functions as a receiver. The rotation laser is arranged on a wall bracket (2) at a side or end wall (12). The transmitter is time-controlled, and an alarm unit (6) releases an optical, acoustic alarm per short message service. An independent claim is also included for a method for permanently monitoring a deformation of a roof.
