Use of an adduct of sodium hydrogen sulfite in an aliphatic aldehyde as agent for reducing the harmful effect of ammonia on aquatic organisms, is claimed. Use of an adduct of sodium hydrogen sulfite in an aliphatic aldehyde of formula X-(CH 2) n-CO-H, as agent for reducing the harmful effect of ammonia on aquatic organisms, is claimed. n : 0-3; and X : OH, COOH or CO-H. Where X cannot be OH, if n is 0.
