The piston ring (1) has a carrier material, particularly steel or a casting material. A wear resistant coating is made of an alternately built multi-coat layer system, where each periodicity comprises of two individual layers of metal nitride. The multi-coat layer system has super lattice structure, where the thickness of individual layer is greater than 2 nanometers and smaller than 15 nanometers. The thickness of multi-coat layer system is lesser than 4.5 micrometers. The adjacent individual layers have different metallic elements within the periodicity.
