The device has a display unit (1), which represents data with different appearances, and a control unit controlling appearance of the display unit. A spacer sensor (3) comprising a heat sensor determines and or monitors a distance between the display unit and an object, and produces a sensor signal. The control unit controls the appearance of the display unit based on the sensor signal, and switches off and on the display unit if the distance exceeds and falls below a maximum distance, respectively.
