The controller (SG) has an interface (IF2) providing a pressure signal of an air pressure sensor (PPS1, PPS2), and a microcontroller (Muc) controlling a person protection unit (PS) depending on the pressure signal. The microcontroller monitors the air pressure sensor depending on a combination of the pressure signal and a diagnostic signal e.g. vehicle speed, where the evaluating circuit comprises a correlator. The diagnostic signal characterizes an actuation of unit for changing pressure in a surrounding of the air pressure sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a person-protection unit.
