In the production of a composite article (A) for storing and releasing thermal energy, consisting of a thermally conductive base layer (I) supporting a material (II) of lower conductivity and high heat storage capacity, the surface of (I) is provided with a microstructure which increases the surface area and the microstructure is covered by (II) in the form of a mineral mass. An independent claim is included for a composite article (A') for storing and releasing thermal energy, consisting of (I) supporting (II), where (a) (I) is in the form of a sheet having a microstructure, formed by pixels and fine, hair-like needles, on at least one surface and (b) (II) is applied onto the microstructure to give a layer providing a various properties contrary to those of (I).
