The device has an environment-detection sensor (3) for detection of a surrounding of a vehicle (1), and a controller (4) e.g. electronics control unit, processing signals of the sensor. The sensor is designed in such a manner that it adapts absorption characteristic of an impact absorber (6) to obstacles (2) recognized by the sensor based on signals of the sensor. The impact absorber has an intelligent actuator, which is controlled by the controller over an interface line to stop the absorption characteristic of the impact absorber.
