The method involves charging a coil (20) with voltage and current for operating an anchor plate (16), and measuring current- and/or voltage absorption of the coil during switching of the anchor plate. The voltage that lies in the coil and the current that flows through the coil are changed for changing movement of the anchor plate. The voltage and/or current is changed in such a manner that braking of the anchor plate is effected before catching a stop unit and a brake disk (10). An independent claim is also included for an electromagnetic brake with a brake disk.
