The lateral gasbag (10) has a sleeve, enclosing a main gas chamber, which has an impact surface, opposite to a support surface. The impact surface has one venting hole (16), where a flexible covering element (20) with an outlet opening (22), is arranged on the impact surface. The outlet opening is arranged on the venting hole so that another venting hole (17), which leads into a control gas chamber, is arranged under the outlet opening. Each of the two venting holes, is assigned to a barrier, arranged on a connecting line between the venting hole and outlet opening.
