The resistor has resistor input and output connections (8, 9), and a current path (10) that is switched between the resistor input and output connections. The current path runs through a programmable memory cell (11-1) e.g. conductive bridging RAM (CBRAM) cell. A resistor adjusting unit adjusts the current path resistance, and a memory condition of the memory cell is programmed. The current path is activated/deactivated in such a manner that a total resistance between the input and output connections is set based on a determined resistance target value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating an adjustable resistor (2) a data carrier for storing a computer program product that is executed on a computer or a digital signal processor for implementing a method for operating an adjustable resistor.
