The device has a lateral ultrasonic transducer (10) to determine a lateral free space adjacent a searching motor vehicle (8), and transmit and receive measuring signals. The transducer is arranged downstream a sensor circuit that determines duration of the signals reflected from an object. A front ultrasonic transducer (11) measures a free space before the vehicle. An adaptation of a time interval between the signals of the transducer (10) following a signal propagation delay is initiated by the transducer (11) during an approximation at an obstacle e.g. post (7), confining a parking spot (6).
