The method involves receiving and evaluating pulse-shaped electromagnetic radiation emitted or reflected by an object. Amplitude gradients of the received electromagnetic radiation are determined. The presence of an object, object characteristics and/or position data of the object are determined using the determined amplitude gradients. A subrange of one of received electromagnetic radiation pulses is extrapolated using the amplitude gradients. The subrange is determined from extrapolating the position data of the object. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for detection of objects and position of the objects.
