The method involves determining a target cylinder charging of the cylinder (12) of the internal combustion engine (10) with a gas-air mixture of a predetermined lambda value depending on a preset target torque. The control times of the timing valve (20) are determined depending on the target cylinder charging and lambda value of the pre-mixed gas-air mixture. Additional fuel is introduced in the combustion chamber of the engine by the injectors (28) if the lambda value of the pre-mixed gas-air mixture is greater than the preset lambda value.
