The method involves collecting soot particles by an exhaust gas post treatment system, and saving multiple engine characteristics, in which values of two independent state variables specify the operating condition of a vehicle. The gas characteristic variables are estimated, which are supplied in the exhaust gas post treatment system for soot particles in a condition different from the initial state on the basis of the engine characteristics. The air-fuel-ratio and the exhaust gas recirculation rate are used as independent state variables. An independent claim is also included for a device for on-board-estimation of soot emission of an internal combustion engine in a vehicle.
