The turbocharger (1) has a pivotably supported and continuously adjustable flap (10) for releasing and closing a by-pass pipeline (9), where the flap is loaded with force by a pre-stressing force, which is produced by a spring unit (12) in a direction of a closed position. The flap is loaded with the force by a control rod (15) actuated using a pressure sensor (17), in a direction of an opened position. The spring unit is arranged such that the prestressing force exerted on the flap has a digressive course over a pivoting angle (alpha) based on the closed position of the flap. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling exhaust gas amount of a exhaust gas turbocharger.
