The invention relates to a method and a dialogue system which allows flexible adaptation of automated dialogues to user groups. It refers to an adaptation of the dialogue structure, which is given by system states, such as messages and prompts, by state transitions, their logical sequence and by the perceptible design of the messages and prompts. The way in which the dialog is adapted is determined by a user class to which a user is assigned during the dialog according to rules of the dialog system. According to the invention, however, the manner in which the dialogue is adapted to persons of a user class is variable. For this purpose, user class-specific counters, which are incremented or decremented each time a state transition occurs, are passed for state transitions of the system-side dialog part. When exceeding or falling short of a counter, a group of counters or a value derived therefrom associated limit value, an adaptation process is started by the nature of the system-side dialog part is changed user-specific.
