Operating motor vehicle collision avoidance system involves estimating width of object entering vicinity of vehicle in rest mode, inhibiting output of warning information if estimated width is below defined threshold
The collision avoidance system has a device for detecting objects (2,3) in the vehicle's (1) surroundings and a warning device for outputting warnings depending on the available free space to the driver in normal mode or externally if the vehicle is parked in rest mode. In rest mode the width of an object coming into the vicinity of the vehicle is estimated and the output of warning information is inhibited if the estimated width is below a defined threshold.
