The method involves detecting a malfunction of a fuel supply system of a fuel tank of a motor vehicle and obtaining a tank characteristic of measurement values using a level sensor. The actual tank curve is compared with a reference tank curve. A decision is made on a malfunction of the fuel supply system when the actual tank curve is different by more than a predetermined degree from the reference tank curve. Two sensors are used in various chambers of the fuel tank.
