The method involves operating an internal combustion engine (10) with sub-optimal injection angle efficiency and partition of fuel amount to partial injections before beginning of combustion. Torque loss resulting from the efficiency and/or partition is compensated. The amount and filling are coordinated so that an air rate of chamber fillings is larger than 1. A measure for temperature is determined at an input of a precatalytic converter (28), and an additional injection is carried out after beginning, if the temperature exceeds a preset threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a control device of an internal combustion engine working with direct injection of fuel in its combustion chambers.
