The device has an arc-shaped unfolded side air bag (1) with an anchor (3) at a lower side (6) facing an armrest (4). An electromagnet (5) is fixed in the armrest, where a force fit connection between the side air bag and the arm rest exists at a door after activation of the electromagnet by an impact sensor. The anchor consists of iron powder, round or strip type iron plates, elastic wire mesh and punched grid made of iron. The anchor also consists of a foil made of magnetizable material.
