The method involves providing a closable supply opening for supplying fuel, an outlet for removal of fuel and a ventilation opening for ventilating an area of a fuel tank not filled with liquid fuel and for reducing positive pressure in the area. A signal for opening the supply opening is sent to an electronic control unit before granting a chance to open the opening by an operator person. A possibility for reducing the positive pressure prevalent in the area is produced by the unit if necessary, and the chance for opening the supply opening is granted after reducing the pressure. An independent claim is also included for a system for executing a method for filling a fuel tank of a motor vehicle.
